Introduction to Recycling
Recycling is an essential action that takes materials that are considered worthless and make them into something new that can be used. “Recycling is a process to change (waste) materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by reducing the need for “conventional” waste disposal and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to plastic production.” (Wikipedia 2014) Wikipedia has highlighted the major ways that recycling helps to sustain our environment and world.
There are many ways in which recycling helps our world, here are some of the main reasons.
Recycling has been around for many thousands of years. Mother Nature has been recycling throughout history “and since the birth of the world” (all-recycling-facts.com 2009) “The first Australian paper mill to use recycled material was built in 1815” According to Planet Ark in 2014. Recycling was and still is part of our everyday life and in the future will become more important.
There are many ways in which recycling helps our world, here are some of the main reasons.
- Recycling reduces the amount of rubbish in landfill, which takes up space that could be used for more important things. There is also the risk that the landfill will contaminate local water ways.
- Items made from recycled materials are cheaper as it takes less energy to recycle than than to find and use raw materials.
- Resources and Wildlife are less threatened when we recycle old materials instead of taking new ones, for example when we recycle paper we can save trees from begging cut down to make new paper.
- Making Recycled goods produces less carbon than creating new items, so recycling helps the climate.
